Community Involvement
MoZi Green is surrounded by communities whose main form of agriculture is subsistence. These communities include Oua, Machomani, Mapako, Naicuanga and Chimbunila. These farmers lack good cultivation techniques and over the years the yield of their small plots has decreased significantly. The lack of markets for their products has also been a major challenge for those who still enjoy good harvests. This environment is very conducive to contract farming.
MoZi Green currently with communities in this regard to improve their livelihoods and also meet the company's objectives. The company over the years has worked with neighbouring communities to empower them and augment its output and thereby avoid land conflicts.
Cereals Production
The company conducts crop farming activities on an area of about 100 ha with a major focus on the production of soybeans and maize. The cereals are current being used as inputs in the production of chicken feed. The bulk of the production is outsourced to selected smallholder farmers who are supplied with inputs and produce maize and soybeans for MoZi Green.
This has been a highly successful initiative as over and above empowering the communities and improving livelihoods, land conflicts are avoided.
Broiler Chicken Production
One of the main product lines of MoZi Green has been the management of broiler chickens. The company started 3 years ago with a chicken production capacity of 2,000 birds monthly. Current production capacity is about 20 000 chickens. Feed is procured from third parties although efforts are underway to produce own feed.
The company focuses mainly on the Cobb500 breed of chicken which has a life cycle of about 4 to 6 weeks.
Chicken Layers
MoZi Green has a flock of chicken layers that produces eggs on a daily basis. Currently the company is keeping about 1 000 eggs laying chickens and on average harvests about 800 to 900 eggs a day. Eggs are supplied to both the retail and informal markets. Feed is procured from third parties although efforts are underway to produce own feed.
Eggs are sold under the MoZi Green brand with the retail market being the main area of focus.
